Privacy Policy
Effective 25 July 2026
Who this covers
Sophie is a private household assistant reached by telephone call and text message, operated for the use of a small number of enrolled households. This policy describes what that service collects and what is done with it.
What is collected
- Your phone number, so the service knows who is contacting it and can reply.
- The content of the messages you send, and of calls you make, including a text transcript of what was said.
- Basic delivery records — the time a message was sent or received, and whether it was delivered.
- What you tell it about your household — preferences, dates such as birthdays, and arrangements, some of which it learns by asking you directly.
No location data is collected. No contacts, photos, or other data are read from your phone. The service has no app and no access to your device.
Where processing happens
The software that understands your messages and composes replies runs on computers owned and operated by the service itself, and it is not a public cloud service. Your messages are not sent to a third-party artificial intelligence provider, and are not used to train anyone's models. They do not leave our servers.
Your mobile carrier and our telephone service provider necessarily handle your messages in transit, as they do for any call or text you make.
What it is used for
Information you provide is used only to answer you and to help the household it belongs to — remembering what you have asked, keeping track of arrangements, and giving useful replies. It is also used to build the service's own picture of your household's preferences, dates, and arrangements, which is why it will sometimes ask you a question rather than wait to be told. It is not used for advertising, profiling, or analytics, and it is not used for any purpose outside the household.
Sharing
No mobile information is sold, rented, or shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Personal information is not sold or rented to anyone, for any purpose.
Information is disclosed outside the household only where the law requires it. Service providers who carry messages on our behalf — our telephone provider — handle only what is necessary to deliver them.
Information between household members
Several people share this service, and it is transparent with the household it serves: it does not keep hidden records about the people it talks to, and it does not lie to them or invent a denial. Information a member gives it may be used to help the household it belongs to. The one deliberate exception is a surprise — a party or a gift intended for another member of the household — which it will keep until the occasion has passed.
How long information is kept
Conversation history and household information are retained while the service is in use, so that it can remember useful things across conversations. Any member can ask for their information to be deleted, and it will be deleted permanently — including from the people who operate the service, who cannot recover it afterwards. Contact iansmith@acm.org.
Security
Information is held on computers owned and operated by the service rather than on a public cloud service, and is not shared with any other party. Telephone traffic to the service is carried over encrypted connections. No system is perfectly secure, and no guarantee of absolute security can be given.
Children
Children in the household may use the service with their parent's knowledge and permission. It is not directed at children outside the household, and it is not open to public signup.
Stopping messages
Reply STOP at any time to stop receiving messages, or HELP for assistance. See our Terms & Conditions for details.
Your choices
You may ask what information is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, by contacting iansmith@acm.org.
Changes
This policy may be updated. The effective date above will change when it does.
