About this service

Sophie is a private household assistant reached by telephone call and text message. It is operated for the use of a small number of enrolled households. It is not a public service, and it is not open to general signup.

Who receives messages

Messages are exchanged only with a small private roster of phone numbers configured by the account owner — the owner and members of their household. No other number can send to or receive messages from this service: a message from a number that is not on the roster gets no reply. Numbers are added to the roster only by the account owner, for people in their own home.

How you opt in

Your number is added to your household's roster by the account owner, with your knowledge, and you opt in by sending a text message to the service from your own phone. Once you have done so, Sophie may also send you an occasional question of her own — asking about a household preference or date she does not yet know — and you are free to ignore it. The service does not contact a number that is not on a household roster, and there is no web form, purchased list, or third-party source of phone numbers.

How often you will hear from us

Message frequency varies and is determined mainly by how often you choose to write. Most messages are replies to your own; occasionally the service sends a question of its own about your household's preferences, or a reminder you have asked for. It does not send marketing, promotional, or bulk messages of any kind.

Cost

There is no charge from us for using this service. Message and data rates may apply from your own mobile carrier, according to your plan.

Stopping messages

You can stop receiving messages at any time by replying STOP. You will receive one confirmation, and no further messages will be sent to your number. To start again, reply START.

For help, reply HELP or contact us at iansmith@acm.org.

Delivery

Messages are delivered over mobile carrier networks and delivery cannot be guaranteed. Mobile carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

What the service does with what you tell it

Sophie composes replies using software running on computers owned and operated by the service itself. Your messages are not sent to a third-party artificial intelligence provider, are never sold or shared, and are not used to train anyone's models. If you ask for your information to be deleted, it is deleted permanently — including from the people who operate the service. How information is stored and handled is described in our Privacy Policy.

Acceptable use

This is a private household service. Do not use it to send unlawful, threatening, or abusive content, and do not attempt to access information belonging to another member of the household through it.

Limits of the service

Sophie is an automated assistant and can be wrong. It is not a substitute for professional advice, and it must not be relied on in an emergency. If you need urgent help, contact the emergency services directly.
